Spring Season 2016
Scott Ross Reports

The Bendigo Volleyball Association hosted their Spring Season Grand Finals Thursday 24th November. Teams took to the court to conclude the season with junior matches starting at 5pm and senior finals starting from 7pm.

In the junior finals Girton Blues proved too strong for BSE 8's in the 15 Boys competition, winning the match 3 sets to nil.
In the 17 Girls match the Bendigo South East 10's faced off against the Crusoe College Wildcats. In a match that was close at times the BSE side proved too strong taking the match 3 sets to 1.
The other junior champions were the Girton Stars in the 15 Girls Division, who easy accounted for the Rebels 3 sets to nil.

In the first senior final, an improving Kanyana side took on Golden Square, who had finished on top of the ladder in the Women's Division. While Susie Godfrey and Caityln Hocking battled hard for the Kanyana side, who took out the second set and had levelled the match at one set all, for much of the game Golden Square seemed to have all of the answers. The consistency of Golden Square then came to the fore as strong serving from Kate Eason and consistent attack from Casey Dutton-Roberts saw Golden Square take the next 2 sets to 18 and 17 points to win the premiership 3 sets to 1.

The Men's Division 1 Final saw The Bois take on reining premiers Golden Square. The Bois got out of the blocks quickly and took the first set on the back of some strong attack from Phil Keech and Michael Mayes. A first set knee injury to Josh Gordon didn't seem to halt Golden Square who regrouped to take the second and third sets with Matt Gordon and Dave McCormick teaming well. The match was forced into a deciding fifth set as the Bois hit back to level at 2 sets all. The final set saw both sides trade point for point, however it was Golden Square who gained a mini break at 10 points all and went on to win a very close match 15-13 in the fifth set.

The Men's Division 2 final saw ladder leaders Golden Square Blue face off against perennial finalists Golden Square Hawks. After a very comfortable first set win the Leigh Gordon led Hawks side looked set for an easy win. Golden Square Blue however clinched the next two sets 26-24 to lead the match with Steve Knapman controlling his side. Brad Kilcullen lifted for the Hawks side as they levelled the match at 2 sets all, then went on to win the first 9 points of the deciding fifth set, closing out the decider 15-6 to win the premiership.

The last final of the night saw the mixed division teams the Fill Ins take on Wilsons. In an entertaining match the Fill Ins team claimed their first premiership with a 3 set to one win, scoring 96 points to 93.
